"At 21 stones and 11 pounds, I was stuck in a rut, I was comfort-eating and ended up as a size 28. I used to make excuses for being fat. I'd always bring it up in conversation first so people would laugh with me rather than at me. I hadn't got any self-confidence. I had a full length mirror and when I started putting the weight on I kept it in the loft. I'd eat rubbish. It would be McDonald's every morning for breakfast and then for my dinner it would always be chips. Then I'd probably have a cake and custard after. One day a guy approached me who was opening a martial arts school. I said to him, 'Why do you think I need it?' He said, 'No disrespect but you're short and you're fat. You're an easy target'. Nobody had ever said that to me without me saying it first. He told me people would think I wouldn't be able to move quickly and they could do whatever they want. I cried. I couldn't believe it. I got the mirror out when I got back home. It was the first time I'd looked at myself, full-length for about three years. I then embarked on a furious mission to shed the pounds. I tried many diets in a quest to lose weight but some of them left me feeling ill. I went to the doctor and he weighed me, it was really upsetting that I'd done this to myself. Because I needed to lose so much weight I then went on to do all the quick-fix diets. I lost four stones on my own, but I was doing it unhealthily with all the high-protein, low carbohydrate diets. I tried that for three months and I made myself ill. My cholesterol and blood pressure went through the roof. You don't have the energy to sustain it. At first it was great but then I found I was snappy, I'd got no patience and I was exhausted all the time. The catalyst for real change came when I passed out at a friend's house and my family were concerned for my health. My brother told me to get off the diet. I fainted and ended up going back to the GP, who asked me what I was doing. He told me to stop the diets. I thought to myself - 'There must be another way'. It was then that i joined the Ladyzone gym near me and started exercising three times-a week. I received a personal consultation and was assessed on my progress every six to eight weeks. I lost another three stones and dropped four dress sizes. I'm not as obsessed with losing weight as such. It's all about the exercise. It's just like going to visit your friends really. If you need any help, they're there. There's nutritional advice as part of your programme too. I'm not actually on any kind of diet any more. I just eat properly! My confidence has returned I say 'Bring it on!' Nothing bothers me. Now I feel all these doors have opened for me. Before, I felt so isolated, whereas now the world is at my feet and I can do what I want." Leanne Jackson
