Dear Daniel
At this time
of year everyone is hoping for a hot summer, lots of nice long evenings
with plenty of sunshine and maybe the odd BBQ! Along with the warm
weather comes a sense of optimism and positive vibes and inevitably the
warm weather usually brings a change in wardrobe too!
If the thought
of putting on that new bikini is daunting don't let it be - you can use
this thought as great motivation for getting you into the gym instead!
Throughout the spring of 2009 we've seen some great results from all
our members across the country and I want to see it continue throughout
the summer of 2009 to make it a truly smoking HOT one! Have a good
2009!

THE ---- L - A -
D - Y - Z - O - N - E ---- WAY!

Little
and often – Don’t fall into the trap of missing meals because you want
to lose weight. This type of yo-yo dieting plays havoc with your
metabolism as your body adjusts to managing on fewer and fewer
calories. When you start eating again the weight gain will be rapid as
your body will now be able to manage on much less. Instead try to eat
something every 3 hours. Three small balanced meals and 2-3 small
snacks. This will help to balance your blood sugar and curb those
cravings.
An apple a day..... - yes
I know you’ve all heard it all before but make sure you get your
five-a-day. A good intake of fruit and vegetables daily is essential if
you want to maintain both your health and figure. Fruit and vegetables
are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are
low in calories and make ideal snacks. When the hunger pangs strike
gorge on your favourites. No-one ever put on weight (as far as I know)
from eating a bagful of carrots!
Drink your way to good
health – water is the most important nutrient for humans. It is
essential to every bodily function and without it you would not be able
to live for more than 100 hours. Nearly 60% of your body weight and 75%
of your muscles are made up of water. There are several myths
surrounding how much water you need each day. The good old 8 glasses a
day appears to be the golden standard but individual needs can vary
according to age, gender, activity levels, illness and
environment. It is generally accepted however among both
nutritionists and the medical profession that on average 1.5-2 litres
of water per day should be adequate. All fluids count towards you daily
intake including fruit juices, tea and coffee... and do not be afraid
to enjoy your morning cuppa because tea contains fluoride which helps
in protecting the teeth and is packed with antioxidants which can
prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer. Likewise tea’s faithful
partner coffee does not deserve the bad press it often receives.
Research has proven that taken in moderation coffee can lift the mood,
sharpen the thinking and help in the mobilisation of fat and endurance
during exercise.
Yes you can put on
weight and be slimmer! - When you take up a regular programme of
exercise be wary of the scales! With consistent training you will
condition and develop the muscles. Each pound of muscle that you
acquire takes up half as much room as a pound of fat. You will
therefore be much leaner without losing a significant amount of weight.
Therefore, use the way your clothes fit and how you look in the mirror
as your guide. When those jeans and that skirt start to get loose
you know you’re busting the fat!
Zzzz....Get your sleep
because if you’re hungry for sleep you’ll be hungry for food! Research
has identified a direct relationship between lack of sleep and weight
gain. On average an adult will require between 7-9 hours of sleep
per day but it would appear that many do not even get the minimum of 7.
This can be a particular problem for women as disturbed sleep can play
havoc with hormonal balance. During the menopause falling oestrogen
levels can trigger a whole host of unpleasant symptoms which can upset
normal sleep patterns. If disturbed sleep continues for prolonged
periods this will increase the production of the hormone ghrelin which
is responsible for feelings of hunger and simultaneously reduce
production of the hormone leptin which tells the brain that you’re
full. These hormone imbalances will therefore trigger food cravings and
lead you straight to the high calorie snacks, sweets, salt and starchy
foods, so beware!
One treat a week –
If you’re trying to either lose or maintain your current weight
the saying “a little of what you fancy does you good” really does hold
true. Treating yourself to 1 higher calorie meal once a week can
actually help in the burning of more body fat by stimulating production
of the hormone leptin. This will help to stave off cravings, keep your
metabolic rate stable and outsmart your body so that it does not start
to adapt to a reduced food intake.
Never use the word diet!
– You may never have noticed before but the first 3 words in the word
diet spell ‘die’ and that’s because for most women once you’ve
been on one for any length of time you feel as if you want to! Diets
even for the most disciplined cannot be followed forever as they all
involve some degree of restriction. Who wants to weigh and measure
every single morsel of food that passes their lips, or eat loads of
meat (Atkins Diet), or stop mixing protein and carbohydrate (Hay Diet)?
I could go on but I think you get the picture. There is not one single
food group that can make you put on weight. In order to maintain a
healthy weight long term you must get out of the ‘diet box’ and think
long term good nutrition.
Exercise – The Ladyzone circuit
is revolutionary in that it combines all 3 key fitness elements –
cardiovascular conditioning, resistance and flexibility training in a
single 30 minute circuit. Both cardiovascular and resistance
exercises have been proven to have beneficial effects on both blood
sugar metabolism and fat loss. Regular workouts will help to control
blood sugar levels which is a key factor in craving sugary foods.
Therefore if weight management is your goal ensure that you schedule
regular visits to the gym (we recommend a minimum of 3 per week) and
you will soon achieve your goals.
