New Staff member Pauline Ellerker lost 5 stones to become a fitness Instructor!
As some of you
may know, Chirelle has decided to pursue her career elsewhere. We
thank her for all her efforts at LadyZone and wish her all the best for
the future. To take her place, I’d like to welcome Pauline
Ellerker. She decided to pursue a career in fitness after losing
over 5 stone by exercising and changing her eating habits.
She says “I used to suffer from
arthritic like symptoms through most of my body and I was constantly
tired and sluggish because of my lack of fitness. This was teamed up
with a food intolerance to lactose and wheat. When I hit the age
of 30 I decided that enough was enough and aimed to get fit and find a
job that I loved.”
“Once I
started exercising I absolutely loved the way I felt after a workout
and this encouraged me to eat more healthily. Since then I shrunk
from a size 24 to a size 14 by shedding over five stone in we ight. I have only got another
two stone left to go until I reach a trim size 12. Not only have
I lost weight but I have seen a massive improvement with my joint
flexibility.”
“I recently
gained my Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification which means I could
fulfill my dream of working in a fitness environment. One of the
things I’ll love about working at LadyZone is being able to watch
people blossom in confidence every day as well as improving their
general health in the friendly atmosphere of the gym.”
Race For Life - Thank you to everyone who supported the Pudsey Race For
Life Team. We had all forgotten what a nightmare course it is but
everyone completed the race in very respectable times. We have
raised just over £250
for Cancer Research – well done everyone. There is still some
sponsorship money outstanding so we’d be really grateful if we could
collect it as soon as possible.

Ladyzone
Orpington is now open! - Work on the site (Ladyzone’s 8th)
began at the start of June. The site was gutted and completely
re-fitted over a 6 week period with the first members starting their
workouts on the 20th July.
The new gym is
situated in the heart of Orpington High street within the borough of
Bromley, south east London. It is the first Ladyzone gym to open in the
south of England and is a testament to the widespread success of the
Ladyzone fitness concept. Managing Director Jamie Cartwright comments:
“It is
exciting times for Ladyzone, considering the current economic crisis we
as a company are still moving forward.
Our
rapid growth over the last few years is a result of our customer focus
approach, when the going gets tough businesses tend to cut costs and as
a result a drop in customer service is inevitable. However, Ladyzone’s
success is built on our members seeing results and enjoying the
experience, therefore during these times we have focussed even more on
providing the best facilities and customer service to our
members.
I feel that
this gives our members confidence and the ability to trust Ladyzone as
a company and invite friends, family and work colleagues along to join”

Bring a Friend Friday – Image and colour consultancy 'True
Colours' came down to the gym last month to show us all how to colour
coordinate pretty much EVERYTHING! From clothes through to make-up the
Ecclesall Rd members were shown how different colours and styles can
help compliment different lifestyles and personalities. It was a
thoroughly enjoyable night for all in attendance.
Remember, Bring a Friend Friday is a night run ‘by the
members, for the members’ – if you have an event or an evening that you
want to put on then contact Paula Blackwood to find out how we can help
you make it happen!
Race for life
– total raised was over £200! Fantastic!

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
COACHING
|
Last month we talked about how people do what works and
if you have a weight issue, on some level, you are getting a pay-off
from it. For each of those habits that are causing your weight
problem you need to identify and write down the payoff. Because
some payoffs are not so apparent, you might have to dig deep, analysing
your situation thoroughly and considering all the possible ways you
could be getting paid off without being aware of it. To help you
get started, here are some examples of payoffs that perpetuate
weight-gaining behaviour.
• Pleasure – You may overeat simply because of the sheer
pleasurable sensation you get from ingesting food. It tastes
good, pure and simple. For you, the sensory gratification of
eating food outweighs the satisfaction of being at your ideal
weight. Although it is true that people by nature are hedonistic
i.e. we seek pleasure and avoid pain – you must get real about the fact
that your pleasure-seeking behaviour could be destroying your health
and your life. If you are not willing to acknowledge the problem
and what is wrong with this behaviour, then you will neither lose
weight, nor effect any genuine change.
• Physiological Calm
– When you eat, your body chemistry is
altered temporarily e.g. to assist in the process of digestion your
heart pumps blood to your internal organs which in turn gives you a
warm relaxed feeling. What’s more, food helps your brain
manufacture natural chemicals that have a soothing effect on your
nervous system. There is a true physiological “high” that comes
from ingesting food, and that high is a payoff you derive from eating.
• Emotional relief – As we have seen, food can serve a variety of purposes,
far beyond simple nourishment: celebration, medication, companionship,
entertainment or avoidance of emotional resolution. Any sort of
emotional high or low becomes a trigger for eating, a way of coping
with shifting moods, or covering up for stress or problems you don’t
want to face or resolve. The downside of eating for emotional
relief is that it ultimately makes you feel worse because it causes
weight gain, brings on feelings of guilt and can erode your
self-esteem.
• Irrational rewards – Far too often, we rationalise irrational behaviour,
and eating behaviour is no exception. If, for example, you have a
stressful day and treat yourself to a double helping of chocolate cake
after work as a way to unwind because “you deserve it”, then you’re deluding
yourself. This payoff undoes any good you’ve done to
yourself and shifts into reverse any progress you’ve made towards your
weight-loss goals. Stop justifying your behaviour in this manner.
• Acceptance – Maybe your payoff from eating has to do with
acceptance or belonging... and no wonder. The primary emotional
need of people everywhere is the desire for acceptance: the emotional
satisfaction that you are a part of a couple, family, organisation,
peer group or social circle and so you eat to be sociable and fit
in. If your friends and family get together frequently for huge
meals, maybe you join in and start pigging out with the rest of
them. The problem with this is that you’re making choices out of
concern for what other people might think, and the hope that by
complying with what you think they want you to do, you will win their
acceptance.
• The Appeal of
Immediate vs delayed gratification – our need for immediate gratification – a fast, feel
good reward right now – is a very powerful payoff. This explains
why you decide to go out for a drink and a pizza with your friends
after work rather than exercising at the gym. Eating and drinking
with friends is fun and relaxing after work; sweating through a good
workout may extend your life 10 or 20 years from now. Who cares
about 10 or 20 years from now? It feels good to eat pizza and
drink beer right now. It’s an approach that disregards the long
term consequences of negative behaviour on your weight, your health,
your relationships, and your overall standard of living.
• Safety – For whatever underlying reason, remaining overweight
may make you feel safe in some way. Victims of sexual abuse gain
enough weight to hide sexual attractiveness and therefore can hide from
men. You may want to hide your own sexuality and so you zip
yourself up in a protective suit called fat. That way, you do not
have to think about or deal with the prospects of dating, getting
married or having a family. Maybe it has nothing to do with sexuality,
but is does have to do with a safety zone created by you to give
yourself an excuse to not reach for some goal in life. How often
have you said “Just as soon as I get this weight off me, I’m going
to…” Give up the excuses and give up the weight.
These are some
of the most common payoffs. Do any of them sound familiar to
you? Don’t worry. Next month we’ll discuss how to change
those bad habits that are standing between you and your ideal weight.
