Dear Daniel
So was the
Easter Bunny rather too generous this year? Time to get back to
the gym if you’ve taken some time off! For many of you that
joined the gym at the beginning of the year, it may be about now that
the initial novelty may be wearing off but it’s important that you
don’t let the impetus drop.
Hopefully
you’ve seen some good results and the regular reviews should help keep
you on track. But please don’t be afraid to talk to a member of
staff if you want to revamp your programme at any time. It’s
important that you feel you’re being challenged in order for you to see
results. To get the best results, why not set yourself little
challenges on the way around – to hit a certain distance on the bike or
cross trainer for example. It makes it more fun and makes it much
more rewarding when you hit those targets.
Kind Regards,
Paula Blackwood (Editor)

WHAT TEMPTATIONS
ARE LURKING IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT? - By Karen Halifax
|
|
I’d
like to challenge you to reduce the availability of fattening foods in
your personal environment so that you will shift to healthier
foods. I want you to make sure that your exposure to
high-calorie, sugary junk foods and the cues to eat them are greatly
reduced. There is no room here for cutting corners. Foods
you should be getting rid of include:
- Sweets, biscuits, high
calorie sugary snacks
- Salty foods e.g.
crisps, tacos, nuts
- Desserts / Puddings
- White bread
- Ice cream
- Convenience foods /
Pre-prepared food e.g. frozen
- Syrups, jams
- Sugared soft drinks
- Any junk food.
Look for hidden sugars
- Any food you habitually
binge on
When I ask
people to do this, one of the most common comments I get is “Sounds
fine but there are foods I need to keep around for my kids /
husband. They aren’t overweight. Why should they
suffer?” I understand your concern. There are solutions if you have
to keep these foods around eg designating a specific cupboard that is
out-of-bounds for you. Make it a top shelf or a cupboard that’s
difficult to reach. However you need to ask yourself whether you
are preparing / purchasing foods that you say your family like, but secretly
they’re your favourite binge foods? Are you baking biscuits
because you crave them, not because they are your kids / husbands
favourite? Don’t con yourself here. If you feel you must
keep certain foods on hand for your family, make sure that these are
the foods your kids or spouse really like – not foods you want.
You can con yourself in another way too: by telling yourself that if
you get rid of all the goodies your family likes, they won’t love you
anymore. However you know this isn’t really true. Equating
food with love is dangerous, especially when in fact you are
jeopardising their health with too much junk food and instilling eating
habits that could someday make them physically sick and obese.
Practise Smart Shopping:
- Shop from a list
prepared when you’re not hungry
- Determine exactly what
you need for a particular period of time – don’t overbuy
- Stick to outer aisles
where fresh foods are located
- Never go food shopping
when you’re hungry
- Shop from a list
prepared when you’re not hungry
