Pudsey
LadyZone Member Rebecca’s Great North Story
It started at 5.30am when the alarm went off and I thought
"why am I doing this?” We got to South Shields about
8.30am and had to catch a train to the start. There were crowds and
crowds of runners everywhere you looked, it was an amazing sight as we
all walked to the start. One of the first events of the day was almost
missing the baggage buses; I had visions of having to carry my rucksack
with me as I ran the 13.1 mile course! In the rush I forgot to make
note of the bus number, which I would pay for later on.
The gun went at 10.40am and 54,000 runners lurched forward, I crossed the
start line at about 11am and high-fived someone leaning over the barriers
who looked like a tramp. Later my Dad and sister told me it was
Sting - whoops! Sorry Sting.
The atmosphere was amazing; the support we got from local people was
incredible. Due to it being a nice day they said over 30,000 people
had come out to support the runners. The route was never quiet; the
red arrows flew past as I jogged over the Tyne Bridge leaving a stream of
red, white and blue. There were bands en-route where you could stop
and have a boogie, there were DJ's and cheerleaders at mile 10 just when
you were feeling tired. I loved it!
One I got into the last mile on the coast the red arrows just started
their show, I hardly noticed the pain in my legs as I was carried away
with the whole occasion. I crossed the finish line 2hrs 33 mins
after starting. Not bad for a first attempt. I then had to
find my bag….now which of the 30+ orange buses was it on? I spent
the next hour climbing up and down off buses, as you can imagine this is
not what you want to do when you have just run 13.1 miles! Finally
my rucksack and I were reunited and I was able to flop on a
hillside. My first meal was burger and chips and it tasted amazing!
(don't tell Karen and Team).
Then the best part, my husband (the driver) had Champagne on Ice waiting
for me in the boot of the car! WOW. A superb end to a special day.
I just want to thank everyone at LadyZone for their support, you have
helped me raise a whopping £1,089 for the Institute of Cancer Research, I
am thankful to all who sponsored me. Also want to say a big thanks
to the staff who motivated me to be able to undertake such a personal challenge.
Anyone thinking of doing something similar? GO FOR IT!!
It’s not too late to sponsor Rebecca. You can either sponsor her in the
gym or online at www.justgiving.com/rebthresh.
I’m always looking for new and innovative experiences for
our LadyZone members, so arranged for the TrueSkin team to come in and
give free consultations for our members.
Here’s how it works. Have you ever wondered how your lifestyle is
affecting the age of your skin or if your skin care routine is right for
you? Your skin is as individual as you are and understanding how to take
better care of your skin, according to its needs, will enable you to
achieve and maintain a lifetime of healthy and beautiful skin.
Using the most advanced skin imaging technology, as seen on programmes
such as 10 Years Younger, a trueskin consultation reveals your true skin
health and underlying problems 2mm beneath the skin surface. This insight
into the future of your skin starts with a consultation with a trueskin
expert, lasting for approximately 30 minutes. This involves taking
digital photographs of your entire face using True White light and other
special patented light techniques. The specialised software then analyses
your images and calculates your personal trueskin scores for wrinkles,
skin bacteria, UV damage, congested pores, excessive oil and overall
complexion. The consultants then suggest a tailored skincare regime based
on your results.
Despite refusing to let anyone see my images (not flattering…), I was
pleasantly surprised with the results. It wasn’t quite as scary an
experience as I’d feared and following the consultants recommendation,
has already shown an improvement.
Part of the Trueskin service is to track results by taking more pictures
6 weeks later. I look forward to seeing how well it’s working.
Although you may have missed the first visit, the consultants will be
back, so if anyone would like a free consultation, let us know early!

Our member Jane Senior is someone who might give Edmund
Hillary a run for his money. Now Jane was not content with completing a
mammoth 70 mile, 10 day hike from Bologne to Florence... oh no... she
went one step further and did it whilst an earthquake shook the whole of
region of Tuscany, France! Jane tells us that bottles of wine were
smashing on the floor and the local people were sleeping outside to avoid
the chunks of plaster that were falling from the ceiling as the
earthquake shook the country! Jane you’re braver than us, we want to
congratulate you on completing the epic trek!
Lucy's Great Yorkshire Run
Well done Lucy for completing the great Yorkshire run, if you haven’t

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
COACHING
Who
is in your Circle of Support?
|
Weight loss is not
something that is easily done alone. If you expect to lose weight and
keep it off, you must build and nurture relationships that uplift you.
Support from people you trust will flow through you like a current and
energise you to get results. There is strength and power in support. This
newsletter deals with the ability to set up those kinds of relationships
built on trust, acceptance and encouragement. It is a fact of life that
when people attempt to make lifestyle and behavioural changes, including
healthy eating and exercise, they succeed in the long term when they have
genuinely positive support provided by family, friends, colleagues or
from professional sources such as doctors, or fitness instructors – like
the LadyZone Staff. Therefore this newsletter deals specifically with the
people in your life and the degree to which they support you or sabotage
you. It takes into account that the people around you aren’t mind readers
– you have a responsibility to tell them what you want, what you expect
and what you’re looking for in terms of their support to help you achieve
your goals.
People will either contribute or inhibit your weight loss efforts.
Suppose for example someone comes to the gym because they are struggling
to lose weight. It might take a while to get them on the right track
because we might have to spend some time talking about their lifestyle
and behaviours. But suppose I go to their house? I meet their spouse and
parents and they’re all overweight. It tells me straight away that they
are surrounded by other people with weight issues, and in all likelihood
these relationships have influenced their weight in some hugely negative
ways.
Without question, your relationships powerfully impact your weight, your
health and your well being. They can influence the choices you make and
affect your behaviour, negatively and positively. With food eg, we tend
to eat more when we are in the company of others, and we tend to eat more
of the wrong stuff. We tend to entertain ourselves with food if others in
our social circle do the same. All of us are prone to doing what our
family, friends and colleagues do, even if it is against our better
judgement, because we want to fit in and be accepted. So we will
generally conform to the behaviour of the groups to which we belong. Our
relationships have the fortunate or unfortunate tendency of pressuring us
towards conformity. It’s just the human way.
Sometime this is healthy and constructive, whilst destructive at other
times. Watch out if you follow the crowd because they may not know where
they are headed. For example if you have a problem with alcohol or drugs
and continued to hang out with people who use alcohol or drugs, it is
very likely that you will eventually use them again. To live in a healthy
manner, you’ve got to recognise the influence of your relationships on
your life and take care that they don’t push or pull you in the wrong
direction.
To gauge how much support you have in your life right now for what you
are trying to accomplish, respond to the following questions. It’s
designed to alert you to the levels of support or sabotage that currently
exist in your relationships. Acknowledging these important aspects of
your relationships can be liberating when you realise that at least you are
getting real about what is going on. Don’t be afraid to tell yourself the
truth, even though it can be scary to admit certain things in your
answers. The only thing worse than having non-supportive
relationships is to be in denial about them.
My friends or family (whichever best applies):
- Compliment me on
healthy eating. True/False
- Refuse to eat in a
healthy manner. True/False
- Notice when my
behaviour changes in significantly positive ways.
True/False
- Insist on taking me
to fast food restaurants or ordering take-aways.
True/False
- Compliment me on my
appearance. True/False
- Push foods that are
a problem for me. True/False
- Help me buy and
prepare healthy meals. True/False
- Protest if I make
changes to the family diet. True/False
- Help me overcome
temptations to eat. True/False
- Make fun of my
efforts to lose weight. True/False
- Offer to exercise
with me. True/False
- Complain about the
time I spend exercising. True/False
- Give me encouragement
to exercise and stick with it. True/False
- Buy and bring home
food that is not good for me. True/False
- Provide helpful
information about nutrition, exercises and health.
True/False
- Eat fattening foods
in front of me. True/False
Any odd-numbers to which you answered False, and
even-numbered questions to which you answered True, indicate that some of
your relationships are working against your efforts to lose weight. Don’t
start blaming the people in your life though. Being aware of what is
going on in your relationships is a good thing because you can deal with
anything as long as you recognise it.
Next month: How you can start to deal with the people around you.

RESULTS

|
Best Review Results – This
month’s award goes to Janice Moran who has lost 1½ stone since joining
LadyZone.
Best Monthly
Attendance – Woohoo! We have 2 new winners at the top of
the leader board for August attendance – Dorothy Hayes and Pauline Daley
with 26 visits each. Pauline Flynn was on an unbelievable winning streak
for a while but as I know she’s going on holiday for 3 weeks, the title
is up for grabs again this month!
Most Inspirational
Member – I’d like to give a special award to Audrey
Firth. For those of you who don’t know Audrey, she has MS and with the
aid of her sticks, manages to complete the circuit 3 or 4 times a week
and still has the energy to stay for a cup of coffee and keep us all
entertained! The only negative is that she gives me a heart attack every
time she clatters one of her sticks on the floor. I’m sure she does it on
purpose...! Anyway, thanks Audrey for demonstrating how far a positive
attitude can take us.
