We all know that sugary pop isn’t the best thing to be drinking, and now there is another reason to cut down – as new research suggests fizzy drinks increase our risk of heart disease.
Scientists say that drinking just two cans of full-sugar pop per day makes it more likely that a woman will develop heart disease – even if you are not putting on weight. The same risks are not, however, associated with men.
A study of 4,000 women aged 45-84 showed those who regularly consume sugary soft drinks are more prone to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and expanding waistlines - but not necessarily weight gain.
Most people (quite rightly) associate obesity with heart disease, but this study showed that ‘hidden fats’ can be just as dangerous. So even if you are not piling on the pounds, your diet can still be harming you.
Making small changes can make a massive difference to your health. So if you are a regular guzzler of fizzy drinks, then make this one of those changes – switch to a diet version, or better still, have water instead. It may just save your life.

This week, newspapers were full of the story that children as young as 12 could be given gastric balloon operations.
Sheffield Children’s Hospital is hoping to carry out the procedure on ten youngsters in the ‘morbidly obese’ category, weighing 14 to 20 stone.
The procedure works by feeding a balloon down the throat and into the stomach, which is then inflated with salt water to make you feel fuller and eat less.
If the trial in Sheffield is successful, the procedures will be rolled out across the country, with medical experts hoping it will provide an alternative to gastric surgery on teenagers with severe weight problems.
Some have criticised the scheme, but the saddest thing about it is that there is a need for the operations in the first place.
The health problems associated with obesity are obvious, but if anyone remembers being at school, the psychological struggle of being ‘different’ can be just as harrowing.
We need to do all we can to help our children live healthy and happy lives.

Another day, another newspaper story about how food or drink can affect major illness.
This time, it’s the Daily Mail with claims that a glass of wine a day can reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
But it’s bad news if you drink beer – because other alcoholic drinks fail to have the same effect, according to the study by two English universities.
A thousand pairs of female twins in their mid-fifties were monitored as part of a study into how food and drink correlates to the number of broken bones. It was found that moderate intakes of wine– such as a small glass a day – were associated with a higher bone mineral density.
But don’t crack open the chardonnay too often, because heavy drinking is known to be a major risk factor for weak bones.

We’re not psychologists at Ladyzone, but we’ve been helping women lose weight for years and shared in those individual journeys.
One factor common to all our success stories a positive attitude – the ladies that lose weight BELIEVE they can do it. That mind-set carries them through their whole day, and doesn’t end when the final buzzer goes on the circuit.
These are our tips for ‘thinking’ yourself slim…
> Before you eat that slice of cake with your cup of tea, visualise where you want to be in 3 months’ time. Looking great at that Christmas party? Wearing a bikini on your winter sun break? Now, look again at what’s on your plate.
> Every night, before you go to sleep, spend 5 minutes visualising yourself at your ideal weight. Float inside your new body and see yourself doing the things you normally do in everyday life, only slimmer and more confident. This really works!
> If you slip up, do not give up. Every day is a new start – so don’t write everything off because you ate too much last night.
> Be kinder to yourself. You DESERVE to look and feel good. Every time you feel down and reach for the biscuit tin, imagine everyone who loves you gathered around you – and gain comfort from that, instead of calories.
Weight loss is more than just exercise, just good nutrition, or just positive thinking. All these elements have to work together if you are going to reach your goals, and at Ladyzone, we believe every woman who walks through our doors can do just that.

Women with - or at risk of - osteoporosis should hit the gym to slow down the rate of bone loss, according to a new study.
While many postmenopausal women might think resistance exercise increases their risk of fracture, researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University say avoiding it actually contributes to the loss of bone mass.
Resistance exercise, which is included in the Ladyzone circuit, includes lifting weights and pushing against weighted machines.
Tracey Howe, Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences at the university, said: “We found that exercise slows the pace of osteoporosis down and regular exercise has a cumulative effect. Stopping exercise means bone loss will continue at the same rate as before.”

If you like red wine, then you’ll like this story. New research has found a chemical found in the skin of grapes could halt breast cancer, by blocking the growth effects of oestrogen.
The chemical – resveratrol – is also found in blueberries, peanuts and cranberries and works by blocking the way oestrogen combines with DNA in a woman’s body to spread tumour cells by turning them malignant.
Researchers at a university in Italy found the growth of breast cancer cells were dramatically reduced when they were treated with resveratrol, while no changes were seen in untreated cells.
The findings have been described as ‘exciting’, but women have been warned not to substitute resveratrol supplements for medical treatment of breast cancer.

A ‘worrying’ amount of women are not taking the dangers of high cholesterol seriously, it has been claimed.
Yesterday marked the start of National Cholesterol Week and a survey for spread manufacturer Flora showed 72% of women have never had a cholesterol test, compared with 60% of men.
Cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease and becomes a problem when levels in the blood are too high.
Taking more exercise and eating a good diet can reduce the risks, but the survey showed that many people are not aware of this.
Laura Tari, nutritionist for Flora pro.activ, said: “It's worrying that so many people - and especially women - don't seem to understand the link. They may consider it just a man's problem, when it’s an important issue for women as well.”
If you are worried about cholesterol, your GP can help.

She’s been a member for four years, and now Christine Havenhand is using her experience to help new Ladyzone users settle into the circuit.
Christine, who joined the gym on Middlewood Road in Sheffield back in 2007, said she was ‘over the moon’ when she was asked if she would like to help out, and is now available to offer support and guidance to fellow members.
She said: “When I passed Ladyzone in June 2007 I decided I was going to pop in and see what it was all about and from that day I haven’t looked back. I love only having to exercise for 30 minutes and the help and support you get along the way is fantastic.”
Christine is there to help members old and new, and is passionate about the gym she has been using for so long.
She added: “I am fascinated and motivated by the different age ranges Ladyzone has - I see people from as young as 16 up to 85 years old. As well as being a mentor, I am still a member after four years because I feel fitter and healthier, I like the staff, and I love how the gym is non-intimidating and gives me some time for myself.”

Cutting out carbohydrates – including wholegrain foods – in a bid to lose weight can put your health at risk, according to a new study.
Female First reports that research has revealed that 38 per cent of the UK population have adopted zero or low carbohydrate diets made popular by Dukan and Atkins in the last two years.
As a result, a quarter of those admit to experiencing bad breath, with others complaining of fatigue, constipation, and feeling short tempered, grumpy and hungry.
At Ladyzone, we believe in eating a balanced diet that combined with exercise, will bring the weight loss results you desire. And a balanced diet includes carbohydrates – just try to choose wholegrain.

It’s the news that women have been waiting for….
Chocolate may actually be good for you, according to research that found people who eat more chocolate are less likely to suffer heart disease and stroke.
The study was undertaken by researchers at Cambridge University, who wanted to try to establish whether a long-speculated association between chocolate-eating and lower heart disease was real.
A study of more than 100,000 people compared the rates of heart disease in those who ate most chocolate with those who ate least.
The Guardian reports that five of the seven studies found chocolate – eaten in a variety of forms, from sweet bars to chocolate biscuits and drinking cocoa – to be protective.
However, nutritionists have warned that chocolate should still be eaten rarely and in small quantities, due to its high fat and calorie content.

Older people who consume too much salt and do too little exercise may face an increased risk of cognitive decline, it has been claimed
A study in Canada of over 1000 healthy adults aged 67-84 showed that those with the highest levels of sodium and the lowest levels of exercise tended to show poorer cognitive performance than those with a low sodium intake and an active lifestyle.
Nutrition experts say adults in the UK should consume no more than 6g of salt per day

According to a new study, a diet high in sugary foods like cakes and biscuits could increase a woman's risk of womb cancer by up to 42 per cent.
The findings are based on a ten year study of 60,000 women, carried out by researchers in Stockholm.
Those who ate sugary snacks two to three times a week were 33 per cent more likely to suffer the disease, while those who indulged more than three times saw the risk jump to 42 per cent, The Daily Mail reports.
Cancer experts in the UK have said it’s ‘too early’ to draw any firm conclusions from the study, but said staying physically active and keeping a healthy weight were the best ways to reduce the risk of womb cancer.

The makers of Acomplia, a diet pill that helps curb appetite, are being sued by patients who claim taking it made them depressed, and in some cases, suicidal.
The drug was taken off the market two years ago after it was linked to severe psychological problems, with figures from the medicine watchdog showing at least one person in Britain taking it committed suicide.
The Daily Mail reports that some of those most seriously affected are suing the drugs makers, Sanofi-Aventis, for compensation.
Acomplia was introduced in Britain in June 2006 but was not approved in America because early clinical trials had shown it could double the risk of developing depression.

The publication of a diet book aimed at young girls has provoked outrage amid claims it may encourage eating disorders.
‘Maggie Goes On A Diet’ features a heavily overweight 14 year old girl, who slims down to become a school football star.
It has been criticised by doctors and nutrition experts in the US, as well as eating disorder charities in the UK.
Amazon, who will be retailing the book in October and list it as suitable for ages four to eight, have already received criticism on their online forums. One comment even claimed that reading the book to children is tantamount to abuse.
Susan Ringwood of UK eating disorder charity Beat told The Independent newspaper: “Concerns about weight, size and shape are beginning to affect children at even younger ages. Six and seven year olds already believe that their size tells the world what sort of person they are.”

Just 15 minutes of exercise a day can boost a person’s life expectancy by up to three years, it has been claimed.
One of the largest ever mass studies* on the benefits of exercise, conducted by the Taiwan Department of Health, found that subjects who exercised for an average of 92 minutes per week had a three year longer life expectancy.
92 minutes equates to 15 minutes of exercise per day, or three half hour sessions a week. So Ladyzone’s 30-minute circuit not only fits into your day, it can help prolong your life too!
*The results of the study were published in the latest issue of medical journal Lancet and reported in Health Club Management.

She’s one of Hollywood’s hottest young actresses, and Black Swan star Mila Kunis says ‘anyone can lose weight’- you just have to want it badly enough.
The tiny star, who shed 20lbs for the film role, provoked controversy during an interview with Glamour magazine, where she said she ‘no longer believes it’ when people say they can’t slim down.
She added: “I love food. But when people say, ‘I can’t lose weight,’ no, no, no, you can. Your body can do everything and anything; you just have to want to do it.”
Ladyzone’s view? Not everyone finds it easy to lose weight, and almost none of us have the personal chefs, trainers and support afforded by Hollywood superstars. However if you eat sensibly and exercise regularly, then for most people the results will come. Just make sure you get there safely.

• Don’t just lay on the beach – take regular walks along the sand
• Swap sugary cocktails for spirits and diet mixers
• Say no to calorific ice creams and choose a refreshing fruit flavour lolly instead
• Choose between a starter and a dessert – do you really need both? (This will also save you some cash!)
• Explore the area on foot when you can; don’t automatically use the hire car or taxi
• Make the most of the hotel pool. You’ll be surprised at the difference just a few lengths a day can make.

Lynne Wildbore has been a member of Sheffield’s Ecclesall Road gym since it first opened, in September 2006. This is her story.
I wanted to get fit and lose weight, so when I saw that Ladyzone had opened, I joined up with a friend. I had never been a member of a gym before, and I was attracted by the fact it only takes 30 minutes.
It fitted in with my lifestyle because at the time, my husband was working abroad in Bahrain and my children were at school, so I used to fit the workout around dropping them off. It was also great that when I was away visiting my husband, I knew I could easily pick up where I left off when I came back to Sheffield.
These days, my husband is back in the UK and my children are away at university, but I still come to the gym three or four times a week, and always feel better when I’ve been.
I love my food and drink, and work as a caterer, so coming to Ladyzone allows me to enjoy my lifestyle guilt-free, as I know I’m working off the calories.
Ladyzone is quick and effective, the staff are really friendly, and the workout is fast and flexible. I really enjoy my visits.”
Lynne is pictured wearing a Ladyfit fleece and polo shirt, presented to her by gym manager Kayce Zielinski as a thank you for her dedication to Ladyzone.

Members at Ladyzone’s Middlewood Road gym in Sheffield are set to reach their goals faster thanks to the development of a more effective 30-minute circuit.
By changing the dynamics of the circuit its effectiveness across all the key components of the workout has been increased.
Jamie Cartwright, managing director of Ladyzone, said: “Our workout has always been effective, however through experimental research we have been able to adapt the circuit system to maximise its efficiency so that members are able to reach their goals faster.”
Ladyzone Middlewood will be the third gym in the UK to get the improved circuit. Ladyzone Stoke was the first and has had the new circuit since May. Their members have been seeing even better results than before and all the feedback has been positive.
This is what members there have said:
“Since having the second circuit I feel my fitness levels has increased even though the circuit was working since it has changed my weight loss has increased and in a 11 weeks I have lost an extra stone with the new circuit- I love it!” Helen Khan – Stoke Member No:49823
“I feel I am getting more benefit as I feel fitter, my weight loss which was slowing down has now increased. Before the change in circuit I had lost 22.5 inches over a 12 month period in just 12 weeks I have lost 19.5 inches – it is definitely working for me.” Emma Charlesworth – Stoke Member No:24667
“I have been a member for over two years now the existing circuit was great as it helped me lose 3 stone in a very short space of time, however the new improved circuit is fantastic. I feel like I am working out harder and have pink cheeks to prove it!” Steph Butler – Stoke Member No:66312
Ladyzone Middlewood will be closed on Thursday 30th December for these changes to take place.
Jamie added: “We understand that some members may be apprehensive at first but we ask that you put your confidence in us. So please feel free to ask any questions, but I would ask that you first trust us and the Ladyzone model to continue to provide you with a fitness environment that is the best for your needs at the right price.”

Ladyzone, the Sheffield based women’s only gym, challenged 13 teenage girls (aged 15 and 16) to Change4Life and act as role models for their Sheffield and Yorkshire peers.

Offering the Silverdale High School teenagers a range of high energy activities - such as boxing, taekwondo and street dance - the Ladyzone initiative is a Sheffield derivative of go, a Government funded activity programme developed by the Fitness Industry Association. To celebrate the innovative six-week programme, Ladyzone ran a Showcase Event for the participants, on 3rd April 2009 at its Ecclesall Road site in the presence of local MP Richard Caborn.
Ladyzone is one of the country’s leading exercise specialists. The ‘ladies only’ gym, which was started almost three years ago by two entrepreneurs (and childhood friends), today has a network of seven gyms stretching from Sheffield to Orpington. This fitness initiative is the start of a much wider community engagement programme designed to make the Government’s Change4Life campaign more relevant to the people of Sheffield. The Club also held a ‘gym challenge’ - a fitness and endurance test, which pitched members against trainers and, ultimately, themselves - in aid of the NSPCC.
“go addresses a major problem” commented Silverdale High School’s Sports Co-ordinator Liz Hughes. “We know that when pupils leave school at 16 a large number dropout from sports and activities - especially girls - and once they leave it can be difficult for them to find places which encourage them to continue being active and make them feel comfortable and part of.
“This is why the go programme is so great for our 15 and 16 year olds - the group most likely to give up exercise on leaving school. It’s raised their awareness of the opportunities that are available to them within the local community and excited them to try (for many of them) something new. “But I think the secret of Ladyzone’s success is the fact that their fitness instructor, Paula Blackwood, came in before we kicked off the programme to lead a PE lesson and get to know the girls. She was great with them and I think that ‘investment’ was invaluable in terms of creating interest in participating on the programme and inspiring my girls to continue to be active after they leave school.” Jamie Cartwright, Managing Director said “Three years ago we set ourselves very simple goals: create an environment which would help women be healthy, feel good about themselves and look good. Make it interesting enough to excite them and simple enough to become a ‘habit’ - because that is the only way to effect long term changes in people’s behavior.
“Having proved successful with adult women, we thought we would see if our philosophy worked with young women and it does. It does because we are offering exciting alternatives to traditional PE and Sports - which sometimes doesn’t really excite teenager girls. We really hope that our 10 students become role models for their peers and that they start a wellbeing avalanche which impacts every corner of our community.”
Commenting for the FIA Andree Deane, CEO said “Ladyzone is the perfect example of an organisation which bridged the gap between a national public health strategy and making it relevant and delivering it locally. Their exciting choice of activities is just what we as stakeholders in the future of wellbeing of our youth, need to do if we are to excite and motivate today’s teenagers and encourage them to develop lifelong activity habits.
“Some might argue that Ladyzone is probably involved in one of the most valuable lessons the pupils will learn at school this year - in terms of the potential to develop a life-long skill .”

BBC1 “Street Doctors” is a hit TV show with over 4 million viewers. Their purpose is to raise awareness of common illnesses among the general public and also to break down barriers to help people who are reluctant to deal with their health issues.
When BBC1 “Street Doctors” came to Sheffield last month they approached Ladyzone as they felt that there was a definite synergy between themselves and Ladyzone’s personal and caring approach that allows them to help people address their fitness and health issues.
And so on 20th Feb 2008 the BBC film crew came to Ladyzone in Sheffield on Ecclesall Road to film their latest series of “Street Doctors”.
Various members and even owner Anthony Carpenter made full use of the Street Doctors and were impressed by the help they received.
Anthony says, “Its another example that Ladyzone has been recognised nationally for helping to increase the nations health and fitness due to its unique approach.”
Jill Scott pictured above with Doctor Barbara says of her consultation with the Doctors “I was working out at Ladyzone when the Street Doctors arrived and I grabbed my chance to get a medical opinion. It was very useful as usually you only go to your GP when the pain is very bad. So not only did the doctor see me in-situ but I learned new terms and they gave me a fuller diagnosis. Thankyou Street Doctor and Ladyzone.”
Although there is no set date the show will be aired and it is likely to be in April 08.

LadyZone owned by Jamie Cartwright and Anthony Carpenter, has won the 1st ever local monthly business award run by The Best of Sheffield - South. LadyZone received over 42% of the votes to win the ‘Best Healthy and Beauty Business’ title, the first category in The Best of Sheffield’s monthly business awards. LadyZone is an exciting new, ladies-only gym using a 30 minute circuit based workout to achieve great results. Due to the success of their first gym on Ecclesall Road, they have recently opened a further gym in Hillsborough. With their two successful gyms in Sheffield, LadyZone intends to provide this facility in every town and city in Britain through franchising. LadyZone have already sold their first few franchise licences with Pudsey (Leeds) already open and the rest opening in the next few months.
Champions of the best local businesses in town, The Best of Sheffield launched the monthly awards scheme earlier this month. The awards are a great opportunity for local businesses to increase their company profile and exposure in and around the area.
“Each month there will be a specific category for which we can nominate a relevant local business”, said Carol Binney who runs The Best of Sheffield - South.
“To qualify for nomination each business has to have an average of at least a 2 bubble ratings from their rate and review page on our site, underlining again that we only promote the best local businesses in Sheffield!”
“Jamie Cartwright and Anthony Carpenter are most certainly one of the best. They have over 9 positive reviews about their business on the site, and many people voted for them to win the ‘Best Healthy and Beauty Business." Blossoming new business Ladyzone has been unveiled as one of four finalists at the Startups Awards 2007 in the ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ category, handing it the chance to win the £5,000 top prize.
The short listing judges were impressed by Ladyzone’s concept and potential, placing the business among a handful of lucky finalists plucked from hundreds of entries.
Jamie Cartwright and his business partner Anthony Carpenter have revolutionised the whole idea of going to a club to exercise, and have established a pioneering new fitness centre called LadyZone “your 30 minute relaxed workout”. This women only centre is dedicated to keeping its members healthy, happy and engaged in their fitness regime. Jamie Cartwright started Ladyzone because he realised that people, especially women, tend to be very intimidated with conventional gyms and sports clubs. The rich and famous find an alternative to conventional gyms by employing personal trainers however the majority of people cannot afford them. Ladyzone provide the solution to this problem with a clever circuit based system that allows personal interaction between staff and members whilst still keeping membership costs on average 40% cheaper than major operators (only £22 a month).
Having established itself with two successful gyms in Sheffield Ladyzone intends to provide this facility in every town and city in Britain through franchising. Ladyzone have already sold their first few franchise licences that should be open in the next few months. Ladyzone’s ultimate aim is to contribute to creating a healthier nation.

The winners will be unveiled at a prestigious awards ceremony and three-course luncheon to be held at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington on Wednesday 31 October.
Jamie Cartwright, Managing Director of Ladyzone comments: “We are thrilled to be a finalist in the ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ category and very much looking forward to the event in October. It’s great that all our dedication and hard work has been recognised and we’re delighted to be in with a chance of not only winning the category but also the much-coveted ‘NatWest Startups Business of the Year’ prize.”
